Engine rebuilds in Welling, built to last

An engine rebuild strips your existing engine to the block, renews the worn parts to manufacturer tolerances, and keeps your original unit — usually far cheaper than a brand-new engine.

A full rebuild is the thorough option when an engine has failed but the block is sound. We strip it completely, inspect every component, and renew the worn parts — pistons, rings, bearings, seals and gaskets — to manufacturer tolerances.

Everything is measured, cleaned and reassembled by hand, then run-tested before it goes back in the car. You keep your original engine, and you get a fixed price agreed before any work begins.

Common symptoms

›Knocking or rattling from the engine
›Heavy blue smoke or oil burning
›Metal in the oil
›Loss of compression or power

What an engine rebuild actually involves

A rebuild is not a patch-up. The engine comes out, is stripped to the bare block, and every component is cleaned and measured against the manufacturer's tolerances — not judged by eye. Anything outside spec is machined back or replaced. The bottom end typically gets new main and big-end bearings, with the crankshaft reground if the journals are worn. The pistons, rings and small-end bushes are renewed, and the bores are honed or rebored so the new rings seal properly. Up top, the cylinder head is pressure-tested for cracks, skimmed flat, and given new valve stem seals and a valve grind where needed. It goes back together with a full gasket and seal set, torqued and timed to specification.

When a rebuild is the right call — and when it isn't

A rebuild makes sense when the block and head are fundamentally sound: high-mileage wear, a spun bearing caught early, worn rings burning oil, or a failure that hasn't scored the bores beyond repair. It's usually the cheapest route to a properly sorted engine, and you keep your original unit with its matching numbers. It's the wrong call when the block is cracked, the bores are damaged beyond a rebore, or the vehicle's value simply doesn't justify the labour. We tell you which situation you're in after the strip, not before — and if a reconditioned or replacement engine is genuinely cheaper for you, we'll say so.

Why the diagnosis comes first

Most catastrophic engine failures are a symptom of something else: a failed oil pump, a blocked pickup strainer, a coolant leak into a cylinder, or a timing component that let go. Rebuilding an engine without finding that root cause is how people end up paying twice. We identify what actually killed it and put that right as part of the job, so the rebuilt engine isn't handed straight back into the conditions that destroyed the first one.

What you get back

The rebuilt engine is run-tested on the bench or in the car before it's signed off, then road-tested. You get the fault codes cleared, fresh oil and filter, and a written record of what was replaced. We'll also give you the running-in advice for your specific engine — most rebuilds want gentle use and an early oil change, and following that makes a measurable difference to how long the work lasts.

How we do it, step by step

  1. 01

    Diagnose and quote

We confirm the fault and its root cause, then agree one fixed price with you before anything is stripped.

  2. 02

    Remove and strip

The engine comes out and is stripped to the bare block. Every part is cleaned ready for inspection.

  3. 03

    Measure and inspect

Bores, journals, and the head are measured against manufacturer tolerances and crack-tested.

  4. 04

    Machine

Crank regrinding, reboring or honing, and head skimming carried out as the measurements dictate.

  5. 05

    Rebuild

New bearings, pistons, rings, seals and a full gasket set fitted, torqued and timed to specification.

  6. 06

    Test and refit

The engine is run-tested, refitted, road-tested, and handed back with codes cleared and fresh oil.

What affects the price

  • ›Engine size and layout — a four-cylinder is far less labour than a V6 or V8
  • ›How much machining is needed (a crank regrind or rebore adds cost)
  • ›Whether the cylinder head is salvageable or needs replacing
  • ›Parts availability and price for your specific engine
  • ›Whether a root-cause failure (oil pump, turbo, timing) also needs fixing
  • ›Collection — included on rebuilds, so it's not an extra

Typical turnaround: 2–4 working days once the engine is with us

Warranty: Every rebuild is covered on parts and labour. We confirm the exact terms in writing with your quote before you commit.

Rebuild, reconditioned or replacement — which is right?

The cheapest route depends on your engine. Here's how the three options compare — we'll advise honestly once we've seen it.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an engine rebuild cost?

It depends on the engine and the extent of the wear, but a rebuild is typically far less than a new engine. We diagnose first and give you one fixed price before any work starts.

How long does an engine rebuild take?

Most rebuilds take 2–4 working days once the engine is with us, depending on parts availability and what the strip reveals.

Do you offer a warranty?

Yes — every engine rebuild is covered by a warranty on parts and labour. We'll confirm the terms in writing with your quote.

How do I know if my engine needs rebuilding or just repairing?

That's what the diagnosis is for. Knocking from the bottom end, metal in the oil, or low compression across multiple cylinders usually points to a rebuild. A single misfire or an oil leak usually doesn't. We check before recommending anything.

What if you find the block is cracked once it's stripped?

We stop and talk to you. A cracked block usually means a reconditioned or replacement engine is the better value route, and we'll re-quote on that basis rather than pressing on with work that won't last.

Is a rebuilt engine as good as a new one?

A properly rebuilt engine is restored to the manufacturer's original tolerances and run-tested, so mechanically it performs as it should. It won't reset the wear on everything else in the car, but the engine itself is sorted.

Can I drive the car normally straight after?

Not quite. Most rebuilds want a gentle running-in period and an early oil change to let the new rings bed in. We'll give you the specific advice for your engine when you collect it.

Do you rebuild diesel and petrol engines?

Both, across cars and light commercials. Diesels tend to involve more work on injectors and turbos alongside the rebuild, which we'll factor into the quote.

Will you collect my car if it won't start?

Yes. Collection across Welling, Bexley, Sidcup, Bexleyheath, Eltham and the surrounding area is included with engine rebuilds.
